“A little drop of water, little grains of sand, makes the mighty ocean and the pleasant land. So the little minutes, humble though they be, make the mighty ages of eternity.” – Julia Carney
A lot of times, individuals have the tendency of exaggerating the future ahead while belittling the power of the present moment. It is okay to be futuristic, it is okay to always look ahead, and it is also equally okay to focus on the present moment because leaders cannot change the future or even accomplish that great vision they have for the entities they lead if small, consistent steps are not taken to see to the realization of the ultimate goals they have for themselves.
A healthy organization or entity is one that has a great culture and also possesses a great vision for itself. Meaning, leaders and their people live by a set of values that they will never negotiate and trade for anything else. In addition, they have a well laid out vision for their entity.
Vision can however be attained when there is discipline on the part of leaders and their people. Without discipline on the part of leaders and their people, the vision of their entities will not be attained in the long run.
Small disciplines, consciously practiced with consistency, ultimately move the leader and the entities being led into the fulfillment of the vision they have set up for themselves.
A disciplined leader without talent, who takes consistent steps, will always outlast a talented leader without discipline and consistency.
And like Richard Foster rightly puts it, “The disciplined person is the person who can do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. The disciplined person is the person who can live in the appropriateness of the hour. The extreme ascetic and the glutton have exactly the same problem; they cannot live appropriately; they cannot do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. The disciplined person is the free person.”
Likewise, as Gordon Kisseih rightly stated, “whatever we do with consistency, creates an atmosphere”, it becomes essential, that leaders live a disciplined lifestyle, that will not only inspire their respective entities to be disciplined themselves, but also to see to the accomplishment of the desired vision of the various entities they belong to.
We cannot always change everything, but with discipline and consistency, we can indeed, change enough of what needs our attention and focus.
